Tech companies team up to combat email scams

Leading tech companies such as Google & Facebook are teaming up to design a system to combat emails scams, otherwise known as phishing.

Phishing is used to trick people in to giving away personal information by sending emails that appear to come from a reputable source such as their bank.

Hackers put NZ information at risk

Hacking group “Anonymous” has claimed responsibility for hacking Stratfor, a private American intelligence company.

They claim to have stolen credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to Strafor’s clients.

New Zealand clients include the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Air New Zealand, the New Zealand Police and Fire Service, as well as ANZ and BNZ banks.

24m Zappos customer accounts hacked

Online shoe retailer Zappos has been the victim of a cyber attack which has affected more than 24 million customer accounts within its database.

Zappos has revealed customers’ names, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, phone numbers and the last four digits of credit cards numbers and scrambled passwords were stolen.

Zappos is owned by Amazon.com

How do hackers target us?

Due to growing use of popular websites such as facebook & linkin, we now share a lot of information about ourselves online. With this information being more readily available, security experts believe hackers now find it easier to craft emails appearing to be from our bank, or other institutions filled with malicious links.

Dave Jevans, chairman of security company IronKey Inc. believes hackers “craft cunningly believable emails that users will have a high probability of clicking on.”

Hack Attack

Bill Saporito of time.com has posted an interesting article covering the recent attacks from various hacking / scamming groups on different organisations or individuals.

The article explores the change in threat techniques used by these groups. While widespread attacks from scammers in Nigeria wanting your credit card details are still prolific, we’re now also seeing a rise to more large scale efforts originating from groups of skilled hackers on large corporations.
