Tech companies team up to combat email scams

Leading tech companies such as Google & Facebook are teaming up to design a system to combat emails scams, otherwise known as phishing.

Phishing is used to trick people in to giving away personal information by sending emails that appear to come from a reputable source such as their bank.

Hackers put NZ information at risk

Hacking group “Anonymous” has claimed responsibility for hacking Stratfor, a private American intelligence company.

They claim to have stolen credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to Strafor’s clients.

New Zealand clients include the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Air New Zealand, the New Zealand Police and Fire Service, as well as ANZ and BNZ banks.

24m Zappos customer accounts hacked

Online shoe retailer Zappos has been the victim of a cyber attack which has affected more than 24 million customer accounts within its database.

Zappos has revealed customers’ names, email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, phone numbers and the last four digits of credit cards numbers and scrambled passwords were stolen.

Zappos is owned by Amazon.com

Building a better password

stuff.co.nz has a good article with some handy tips on how to create a better password.

It seems we’re not very creative when we come up with our passwords. In 2009, 10,000 Hotmail passwords were leaked. The most popular passwords?

123456, followed by 123456789. Not very secure!

I use the Password Generator tool over at pctools.com whenever I need a new password. It’s great. It instantaneously generates a password of whichever length you choose. So next time you’re in need of a password, give this tool a go.

Researchers Defeat CAPTCHA

Researchers at Stanford University have created an automated tool capable of working through text-based anti-spam tests such as CAPTCHA. CAPTCHA is a very common anti-spam test commonly used on websites where users can submit information.

CAPTCHA stands for ‘Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart’.

Research reveals extent of identity theft fraud in USA

A report from Javelin Strategy & Research has revealed that in 2010 an estimated 8.1 million Americans fell victim to identity theft, resulting in a loss of more than $37 billion dollars.

Online banking fraud falls in UK

Financial Fraud Action UK has published figures revealing that £16.9 million was lost due to online banking fraud from January to June this year. This compares to £24.9 million lost during the same time period in 2010.
